It is so easy to make your own homemade blend. The reason I like to make my own is because store bought ones could last longer than you want, and they usually lose flavor and potency over time. I make smaller batches or split it up and gift it.
But before we head over to the recipe, I do have a few tips if you’re making your own spice mixes:

Each of these recipes are a combination of various recipes that have been personally tweaked over time. They add great flavor to your desserts and dishes.
First up is a pumpkin pie mix, an easy blend of daily used spices. There are a couple of optional spices that can be added or avoided depending on what you like.
- 31/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 2 teaspoons nutmeg
- 1 teaspoons ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon all spice
- ½ teaspoon ground cardamom (optional)
- ½ teaspoon ground mace (optional)
- Mix all the spices together in a bowl and store in an airtight container.
Next up is an Apple Pie Spice Mix. Isn’t it the best to have these tiny bottles on hand? You never have to make a note to purchase at the supermarket.
If its over, it will take less than 5 minutes to combine these warm spices in a jar, and a double batch lasts really long too.
- 4 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 11/2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 2 teaspoons nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon all spice
- ½ teaspoon ground cardamom (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
- Mix all the spices together in a bowl and store in an airtight container.
Looking for recipes to use your homemade blend? I recommend these:
It’s true.. any spicemixes that are left for too long lose any flavor whatsoever. I find that is true with most of the spices anyway and have started making my own blends or grinding my own spices anyway. Makes a world of difference!
These are perfect! Funny how we search everywhere for these spices, yet their so easy to make! :)
Great recipes and I agree those larger bottles always end up being tossed. In fact I really should go through my spice cabinet and toss out old jars.
I love all your recipes and those cute little jars. Where did you find those?
Thanks for sharing.
I love this spice mixture. I buy a mix that I can only find on the web,but this is so much better. Thank yo for sharing.
Those orange pumpkin muffins are going on my must make list. The recipes look delicious!
we love home made spice blends, they always come handy. I always toast mine, cause the humidity is too much. Always store them in the fridge as well, otherwise mold grows.
What a cute gift idea!!! and you are my fourth email of the day talking about spice mix.. I just have to make it.. its almost like there is a secret club going on.. and the topic of the day is home made spice mix!!! :)
Great tips on making and storing home-made spices. Thanks for sharing them and these recipes.
I love making my own spice blends at home … So much more economical :-)
There are so many things for which the home made versions are so much better. Like these spices. I would use these all fall and winter! And your home made vanilla extract…..was just beautiful and something to use all year round! Thanks for providing us with these blends and your sample of goodies is such a perfect reminder that home made is always best! : )
OMG I LOVE THIS!!! I like inhale this stuff so it’s amazing!!
I love this, I always make my own pumpkin pie spice mix but I need to try your apple variation too!
I support any effort to make as much stuff on your own!
I need to make a small batch too for the holiday baking too. Thanks for sharing it!
That’s a great idea my friend, spices make the desert :D
Cheers

What a great idea making your own spice blends. Where did you get the storage containers with those cute colorful lids? Love all your photos too.
I love blending my own spices. And you are right about potency.
Need to make pumpkin cheesecake. Soon!
I look at the ingredients in these spice mixes and just want to kick myself. I have every one of these spices in the spice rack so why on earth do I go out and buy “pumpkin spice”?!?! DUH! Thanks for these recipes because I do make my on poultry seasoning and meat rubs, so it’s not something I don’t do. Now I’ll add these mixes to my pantry!
This will be very helpful because I refuse to specifically buy apple pie spice mix.
These are awesome spice blends and I like to make my own. Noting it down as they are coming handy in fall and winter.
This is fantastic!! I am definitely going to be making both. :) Thanks for sharing this…. I have most of the ingredients so I can definitely do this at home. :)
Great post about homemade spices for baking, An. I love to male my own and want to try all your delicious recipes :)
Simply beautiful! Love your idea very much, will definitely make them soon and try on those recommended recipes!
Great idea to make your own blends. We do that with poultry seasoning without fail (my wife is allergic to sage, a common ingredient in poultry seasoning). I’ve done it with pumpkin pie spices, though it’s been a few years. But it’s so nice getting exactly the flavor that pleases you!
Great recipes! Pumpkin pie spice is one thing I can’t bring myself to make for some reason. I know I have all of the spices on hand but there’s something I love about buying a fresh bottle every season. I manage to use it up throughout the year in smoothies and such.
Oh yum!! I keep telling myself I need to make some spice blends but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.
I went to a workshop today in Brisbane and met the loveliest woman who does cooking demonstrations in peoples’ homes where she cooks an Indian dinner. She makes all her own spice blends. She said she might come all the way up here to put on a dinner for six for me.
This is a great gift idea too! I have a friend who likes making pies with the tinned pumpkin-imagine if I could just give this to her and then she would just add it and sugar and eggs! :D
What a great idea for your own kitchen and to use as gifts for your friends! Thank you for making me hungry with all those apple and pumpkin recipes too! A good start to my day. I hope you have a wonderful end to your week and an even better weekend.
Thanks for sharing this! So timely for fall baking!
Thank you for posting the recipes
I was going to email you asking for your spice mix recipe when you posted the apple pie cake
Great idea. I am always telling myself I’m going to make some spice mixes and then never do. Your apple pie bread is distracting me right now it look so good.
This is why blog hopping is fun. I learn new things! And guess what, I was going to buy pumpkin pie spice mix earlier this week, and I was hesitant to buy because the small bottle could cost me I think it was $8-9 (I was at a regular American supermarket). I then told myself I don’t bake enough to justify this cost and didn’t buy. Good thing I left because I have ALL of these spices (besides mace) in my pantry! Ground ginger one is not even opened (since I didn’t know how to use it). This is a real great timing!
such a useful post!
These are great! I recently posted a taco seasoning recipe – I love using homemade mixes because it cuts out those mystery ingredients and unnecessary preservatives!
This absolutely gets the Parsley Sage seal of approval! I guess I never even realized that these fabulous flavors were a blend I could actually make myself :) Duh!
love this and great tips for storage
Great gift idea! I just love all those pumppkin and apple recipes. Perfect for the cooler weather we’re having now. Delicious!
